New Zealand - The Start - Auckland

We've just returned from a trip to New Zealand and Australia. Whilst we try to set up our web site and process our images, I'll post some information here about the places we visited. Firstly I'll just give an outline, and just one area per post. If anyone wants more details then just mail me or add a comment. More places in a couple of days.

Auckland

Auckland, at least the part we saw, is a city of the young and fashionable. The streets were filled with people dressed to the nines. Women wore skirts or dresses, men wore suits. This city portrayed affluence. There were more banks than stores in the main shopping streets.

Down by the sea they are obsessed with sail. There are huge sailing boats everywhere and challenging for the America’s Cup is more than a national pastime.

But Auckland is also a city of leisure and culture. There are several theatres, parks and wide open space and a most interesting museum. On the islands in the bay, they grow vines and make some spectacular wine.

Auckland is also built on top of a volcano which seems to bring a certain transience to it all.
